ইংরেজী সাহিত্যের ইতিহাস ১৬৪৯ থেকে ১৬৬০ সাল পর্যন্ত সময়কাল Commonwealth Period বলে পরিচিত। কারণ- এসময়ে ইংল্যান্ডে কোন রাজতন্ত্র ছিল না। Commonwealth বা গণতন্ত্র চালু হয়েছিল। রাজতন্ত্রে বীতশ্রদ্ধ জনসাধারণকে গণতন্ত্রের জন্য বহু সংগ্রাম করতে হয়। Oliver Cromwell ছিলেন এ সংগ্রামের নেতা।

অবশেষে ১৬৪৯ সালে প্রথম চার্লসের শিরশ্ছেদ হয়ে গেলে তিনি ইংল্যান্ডের রাজ্য ক্ষমতায় অধিষ্ঠিত হন। তাঁর এ ক্ষমতা গ্রহণের মাধ্যমে রাজতন্ত্রের বিলুপ্তি ঘটে এবং গণতন্ত্রের উন্মেষ হয়। যেহেতু এ সময়ে Commonwealth বা গণতন্ত্র চালু ছিল তাই এ যুগকে Commonwealth Period বলা হয়।
